A delegation from the All-Africa Students Union (AASU), led by our Chief Operating Officer Jemilatu Mamshie Bawa, visited the home of Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed, Member of Parliament, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, and Former Secretary General of AASU, to convey our deepest condolences to his family. On behalf of the entire African students’ movement, she signed the book of condolences, paying tribute to his remarkable service and lasting legacy.

Dr. Murtala was not only a champion for the environment but also a towering figure in the student leadership space. He firmly believed in the power of student leaders to shape good governance across Africa, and throughout his career, he worked tirelessly to mentor, inspire, and equip young leaders to take an active role in building a better continent.

Only a week before his sudden passing, he honoured us with his presence at the Eco Ambassadors Training Workshop 2025, where he delivered a powerful keynote address. We had begun discussions to work closely with him on climate action and sustainability projects for students across Africa. His passing is an immeasurable loss to our Union and to the student movement on the continent.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family and to the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, during this time of grief.

May the soul of our beloved Dr. Murtala Mohammed rest peacefully in the bosom of Allah.
